Hydrogen sulfide is one of the leading causes of workplace gas inhalation deaths in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), hydrogen sulfide caused 46 worker deaths between 2011 and 2017.
Under the new 2017 standard, ANSI recommends certification-level training for all individuals who have potential for exposure to H2S concentrations above the occupational exposure limit. In order to qualify for certification, the training must be delivered by a competent instructor (based on criteria outlined in the standard), must be a minimum of 3-4 hours in length, and must cover all topics listed in the standard that are relevant to the worker and/or workplace. The employer is responsible for issuing certificates, and for ensuring that the training provided is appropriate and comprehensive. Certifications are good for one year.
Course length: 3-4 hours Delivery method: Available in-person.

The primary method of H2S exposure is through inhalation, where the gas is rapidly absorbed by the lungs. People can sometimes smell the “rotten egg” odor of hydrogen sulfide when lower concentrations of the gas exist. However, after continuous low-level exposure, or with higher concentrations, a person loses his/her ability to smell the gas which means you can NOT rely on your sense of smell to indicate the presence of hydrogen sulfide.
This course is intended for anyone currently working or wanting to work in the Oil & Gas Industry. The goal of H2S Alive is to prepare workers to recognize H2S (hydrogen sulfide) hazards and protect themselves, as well as perform a basic rescue during an H2S incident.
